HAU President wins Juran Award

Holy Angel University president Dr. Luis Maria R. Calingo has won this year’s Juran Medal, the gold standard for quality management in the Philippines.

The award is given annually by the Philippine Society for Quality (PSQ), Inc. to a senior executive for achievements in promoting excellence in his company and industry. It was named after Joseph Juran (1904-2008), the quality management guru who shaped current quality concepts and helped accelerate the total quality movement in Japan and other countries.

Dr. Calingo is being recognized for his work in developing and implementing the Philippine Quality Award (PQA) since 1995, as well as for his advocacy in promoting quality management by serving as consultant to a wide variety of Philippine business organizations in their strategic planning processes and business excellence practices, which led to some of them being recognized with the PQA.

Dr. Calingo helped develop the PQA criteria based on the Malcolm Baldrige Excellence Framework, which is the highest recognition for quality in the United States and the benchmark for other international quality awards. Dr. Calingo has been a Baldrige examiner since 1997.

As President of HAU only since June 2015, Dr. Calingo has put one of the biggest Catholic universities in the Philippines on the road to quality management, personally leading training activities and holding meetings with faculty, employees, student leaders and even alumni abroad to rally them to participate in his efforts.

Within weeks of his presidency, he signed a peace agreement with the union that staged a strike in 2013, started weekly lunch-meetings with the rank-and-file and crafted a plan that would save faculty from being retrenched by K-to-12 and instead offer them a development package to prepare them for the return of college freshmen in 2018.

Dr. Calingo also required all Christian Living faculty to comply with the Ex corde Ecclesiae mandatum of pledging allegiance to the teachings of the Catholic Church, a move that the influential Cardinal Newman Society cited as a role model for other Catholic universities in the world.

"In just a short time, the new president boosted the morale of the community and already made everyone appreciate the two themes of his administration, namely, 'HAU as the workplace of choice' and 'it's all about students,'" one school administrator said.

The Juran Award is seen as a boost to the University's position as a leader in quality education and an advocate of excellence in Philippine higher education.

Dr. Calingo's co-awardees are Dr. Alfredo Bengzon, president and CEO of The Medical City and former Secretary of Health and dean at the Ateneo, and Dr. Ramon Bacani, Department of Education undersecretary and SEAMEO INNOTECH executive director.
