Baccalaureate Mass

Members of the Administration, Faculty of the different Colleges, my dear students, ladies and gentlemen. Good Morning.

Speaking as your University President, I can tell you there is no happier time on campus than commencement.

It is a joyous occasion, especially among us Filipinos because we parents, put a great importance on education as a legacy to our children. We truly value education because we know that if you are educated, there is no limit to what you can do.

I hope your HAU experience has been both beneficial and fun. I am confident it has left you well prepared for the great future that lies ahead and a great hope for tomorrow.

The world you are entering is so much different from that of ours and the generation before us. It is a world of turbulence and uncertainty, technology-driven, borderless and global. Today’s social and economic problems are real and complex. Resources are scarce. This world needs new talent and a continued dedication to uplift human dignity. You are in the midst of all of this exciting and chaotic world. It is my hope that we have prepared you well for this.

I would like to believe that you, my dear graduates are the so-called “knowledge workers” - people who put to work, not their muscles and not their hands but their minds. The movers in today’s society are the people who carry knowledge in their heads- and use this knowledge to make things work.

What does this mean for you? It means that learning must become a life long concern for everyone of you. Learning must not stop on graduation day. Learning must continue for as long as you live.

Now, your concerns will be different. You will have businesses to run, you will have your own careers to take care of, and you will have your own dreams to pursue, but never forget you have a country to serve.

You have invested significant time and money to acquire the professional credentials and technical skills needed to succeed. You have gone thru a journey - a journey for some of you who took 4 – 5 years, and some even more. And it is my prayer that your journey for your professional development does not end with your College Diploma. I am strongly encouraging you to pursue your Graduate studies at Holy Angel where you can take your Master’s in the areas of Management; Entrepreneurship; Education, Engineering, IT, Library Science, Guidance and Counselling.

As you leave the walls of this great University, we are confident that you carry with you the values of a true and genuine Angelite — a competent professional prepared to enter the world of work, a socially responsible citizen inflamed with the passion to serve his community and society, and a maturing Christian equipped with virtues and values needed to advance God’s kingdom here on earth. I quote Kordestani: “In life, you make small decisions with your head and the big decisions with your heart.” Have the courage to follow your heart and your intuition.

The choices we make tell much of us. Remember to share what you have with others - your talents, success, fortune-specially with the less-privileged and marginalized sector of our society. At the end of the day, you will discover that you have done something good, you have touched people’s lives and thereby, enjoy the peace of conscience so essential for one’s inner joy.

Congratulations and may your Angel guide and protect you always. Godspeed!
