Basic Ed scribes, school papers reap DSPC tilts

The Laboratory Elementary School (LES) and High School (HS) student-writers of HAU reaped twelve individual contest awards and four group contest awards during the recently-concluded Division Schools Press Conference 2013 (DSPC 2013). The Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Angeles City hosted the three-day event held on October 10, 18, and 24 at the Gabaldon Building, Angeles Elementary School.


Out of the dozen scribes who brought home the bacon, seven are Angelian high school staff writers while the remaining five are elementary pupils cum Angel Wings campus journalists. The Angelian is the official student publication of the HS Department whereas the Angel Wings constitutes its counterpart in the LES.


The winning Angelian scribes and their respective individual contest awards and categories are the following: Joseph Rassel Santiago-1st Place Sports Writing in Filipino; Marc Gio Navelgas-1st Place News Writing in English; Drego Miguel Calbang-2nd Place Editorial Cartooning in English; Jhuniella Aira Salalac-3rd Place Feature Writing in English; Abelardo Cortez Jr.-1st Place Science Writing in Filipino; Therese Joy Waje-3rd Place Feature Writing in Filipino; and Sache Sofia Nacpil-4th Place Science Writing in English.


Completing the lineup of winners are Angel Wings staffers Maxeene Ahyen Mercado - 2nd Place Sports Writing in Filipino; Ayessa Marie Agustin-2nd Place Editorial Cartooning in Filipino; Carlo Miguel Calbang-2nd Place Editorial Cartooning in English; Ivan Kyle Agustin-4th Place Photojournalism in Filipino; and John Vincent Torres-5th Place Science Writing in English.


Second and third placers are set to compete in the upcoming Regional Schools Press Conference 2013 (RSPC 2013). The next leg of the nationwide campus journalism writing competitions is slated on November 28-29 at the Fontana Leisure Parks, Clarkfield, Pampanga.


In the group contest category, the Angelian won the following: 2nd Place School Highest Pointer in English Category—Secondary; and 2nd Place School Highest Pointer in Individual Writing Contest—Secondary. The Angel Wings in turn reaped the following awards: 3rd Place School Highest Pointer in Filipino Category—Elementary; and 3rd Place Best Editorial Page in English—Elementary.


The HS and LES contestants were coached by Mr. Alvin Santos, Campus Paper Adviser in English, and Mr. Robin Angelo Taruc, Campus Paper Adviser in Filipino.


Annually, the Department of Education holds extensive writing competitions in consonance with the Campus Journalism Act of the Philippines. The tiered contests include the initial DSPC, where qualified winners level up by competing in the RSPC. Finally, RSPC qualified winners compete in the last leg of the contests which is the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) set to be held in April 2014 also in Fontana Leisure Parks, Clarkfield, Pampanga.
